About the black travertine — genuine natural stone with a matte black surface finish

The body of this lamp is made from genuine travertine stone. To create a deep, even black aesthetic, the stone surface is finished with a matte black coating — rather than left in its natural off-white state. This is an intentional design choice: the weight, density, and natural pore structure of genuine travertine are preserved, while the surface colour is controlled. The entire stone presents a consistent matte black — this is exactly as it was designed to be.

Natural travertine — formed by geological processes

Travertine is formed in the natural environment through thousands of years of complex physical and chemical processes. Even beneath the black surface, the pore distribution and stone characteristics of each piece remain entirely unique.

The room makes more sense to me because the ceiling light feels connected to the room rather than added on. Online, I worried it might be too much; in person, the room feels more settled than I expected from one change. The design works for me because the design is noticeable up close and calmer from a distance.

What has lasted beyond the first impression is that the upstairs landing is nicer to spend time in without feeling newly decorated. This went in just before family came to stay, and the upstairs landing finally felt ready. The more I look at the room, the more I think the ceiling light adds presence without making the room feel heavy.

With the room viewed as one composition, the hallway feels more balanced than it did before.

The practical side of living with it is that I notice the ceiling light in passing more than I expected. With everything else left alone, the ceiling light makes the room feel considered rather than decorated. Late in the day, the entry feels more inviting.
