About the black travertine — genuine natural stone with a matte black surface finish

The spotlight head of this sconce is made from genuine travertine stone. To create a deep, even black aesthetic, the stone surface is finished with a matte black coating — rather than left in its natural off-white state. This is an intentional design choice: the weight, density, and natural pore structure of genuine travertine are preserved, while the surface colour is controlled. The entire stone presents a consistent matte black — this is exactly as it was designed to be.

Natural travertine — formed by geological processes

Travertine is formed in the natural environment through thousands of years of complex physical and chemical processes. Even beneath the black surface, the pore distribution and stone characteristics of each piece remain entirely unique.

When I turn the other lights down, the hallway feels especially comfortable. Looking at the room as a whole, the hallway has a clearer focal point without feeling busy. I had to simplify what I placed around it, and I am glad I did not switch to the safer option.

From the doorway, the living room feels more intentional from more than one angle. On darker evenings, the atmosphere feels relaxed without becoming dramatic. With the other pieces doing less, the wall light stands out without making everything else compete. The stone is a nice detail, especially because the overall design still feels balanced.

What changed most is that the wall light adds presence without making the room feel heavy. The visual balance works because the room can stay simple while the wall light carries enough character on its own.

From across the room, the wall light gives the room structure without dominating it. As evening settles in, the room feels less flat. Between workdays and weekends, the room feels comfortable rather than staged. The stone reads more naturally in person than I expected from the photos.
