About the black travertine — genuine natural stone with a matte black surface finish

The cylindrical shade of this wall light is made from genuine travertine stone. To create a deep, even black aesthetic, the stone surface is finished with a matte black coating — rather than left in its natural off-white state. This is an intentional design choice: the weight, density, and natural pore structure of genuine travertine are preserved, while the surface colour is controlled. The pores and organic variations visible in each piece are authentic — this is exactly as it was designed to be.

Travertine is formed in the natural environment through thousands of years of complex physical and chemical processes. Even beneath the black surface, the pore distribution and stone characteristics of each piece remain entirely unique.

My family likes the room more now, and I think this wall light is part of why it feels more complete. Up close, the travertine gives the design some depth, while the overall look still stays easy to live with.

Living with it has been easy; it adds something to the room without asking for attention every time I walk in, and it has been easy to live with since then. My main concern was whether it would still feel right after the newness wore off, and so far it does.

The look is a touch bolder than I expected, though it works much better now that the rest of the powder room is settled. Evenings in the room feel more finished now, which was exactly the change I wanted.
